Frequently Asked Questions About PrEP & PEP
Who should consider taking PrEP or PEP?
PrEP is recommended for individuals at high risk for HIV, such as those with an HIV-positive partner, people who inject drugs, or those who have unprotected sex with multiple partners. PEP is for anyone who may have been exposed to HIV during a single event.
How can I start PrEP or PEP?
To start PrEP or PEP, visit CalPride for a consultation. We will conduct necessary tests and provide you with all the information you need, including how to navigate benefits and insurance to cover the cost of medication.
Is PrEP effective immediately after taking it?
PrEP reaches maximum protection from HIV for receptive anal sex after about 7 days of daily use and for injection drug use and vaginal sex, about 20 days of daily use. PEP should be started as soon as possible after exposure, ideally within 24 hours.
